This is The Digital is a multimedia project aiming bridge academic and commercial entertainment practices to introduce a few key concepts of digital studies that we discussed in class and some that we didn’t. Bringing together theory, music, video, photography and gifs, the website is organized similarly to an art exhibition. A multimedia gallery, but online. Everything is structured around four original songs that lead to ideas, articles and other media to engage in a discussion about the digital space. The lyrics draw from class readings and discussion, and all songs were produced to sound very technological and robotic to represent the digital sonically. The project starts by asking what the digital is, and looks at how we engage with it, or perhaps how we are the digital. With the goal of synthesizing an idea, a feeling, or a mood for the digital, the project’s title is a reference to Spotify’s “This is-” artist playlists, which give the essential songs that define a specific artist (“This is Lady Gaga”, “This is Drake,” etc.).
